NaTakallam Guidelines & Terms of Agreement
Last Updated: October 2026
These Guidelines & Terms of Agreement (“Terms”) govern your use of NaTakallam’s language-learning and related services. By registering for, purchasing, or using NaTakallam services, you agree to these Terms.
1. About NaTakallam
NaTakallam is a New York-registered social enterprise that provides online language learning, cultural exchange, educational programming, translation, interpretation, and related services.
NaTakallam was originally created to provide income opportunities to Syrian refugees by hiring them as online language partners. Today, our Language Partners and language instructors come from diverse conflict-affected, refugee, displaced, immigrant, and Global South backgrounds and provide services in Arabic and other languages.
Our services may include one-on-one language sessions, Integrated Curriculum programs, school and university programming, organizational language training, and translation and interpretation services.
2. Language Sessions
NaTakallam Language Sessions are designed primarily to provide students with opportunities to practice and develop their language skills with a native or highly proficient language partner.
Language Sessions are flexible and may be adapted to the student’s level, interests, goals, and learning needs. They may be used by beginners, intermediate or advanced learners, or students who wish to complement another language-learning program.
Language Sessions may also be adapted for children aged 6 and older, subject to the child-safeguarding provisions in these Terms.
Sessions are generally up to one hour unless otherwise specified at the time of purchase.
Sessions are conducted online using NaTakallam-approved video-conferencing platforms, currently including Zoom and Google Meet. NaTakallam may change or add approved platforms as its services evolve.
3. Purchasing Language Session Bundles
Current Language Session bundle options and pricing are displayed on the NaTakallam website at the time of purchase.
Unless otherwise stated at the time of purchase:
- 3-session bundles are valid for 8 weeks;
- 10-session bundles are valid for 12 weeks;
- 20-session bundles are valid for 22 weeks; and
- 30-session bundles are valid for 25 weeks.
The applicable validity period begins according to the terms communicated at the time of purchase or assignment of the bundle.
Session bundles may not be split among different students unless the product has been specifically designated by NaTakallam as a shared or multi-user product.
4. Matching With a Language Partner
After registration or purchase, NaTakallam will make reasonable efforts to match the student with an appropriate Language Partner (“LP”) or language instructor based on relevant factors such as language, level, availability, learning goals, and other information provided by the student or parent/guardian.
NaTakallam cannot guarantee that a particular LP will be available or that a particular match will be possible.
If NaTakallam is unable to identify an appropriate LP or instructor and therefore cannot provide the purchased service, NaTakallam will provide the applicable refund or alternative arrangement.
NaTakallam may recommend or make a different match where reasonably necessary.
5. Scheduling and Cancellation
Once a session time has been confirmed, students should provide at least 24 hours’ notice if they need to cancel or reschedule.
If a student cancels with less than 24 hours’ notice, the session credit may be forfeited.
NaTakallam may make reasonable exceptions where circumstances warrant.
6. Tardiness and Missed Sessions
If the LP is more than 15 minutes late or does not attend a scheduled session, the student will not lose the corresponding session credit and may request a rescheduling or re-credit.
If the student is more than 15 minutes late, the session may be treated as completed and the corresponding credit may be forfeited.
NaTakallam recognizes that some LPs may live or work in circumstances where connectivity, electricity, infrastructure, or other conditions may create unexpected difficulties. NaTakallam will make reasonable efforts to address such situations fairly.
7. Refunds
Refund eligibility depends on the product purchased and the circumstances of the request.
For Language Session bundles, NaTakallam may provide a refund or replacement sessions where repeated missed or materially delayed sessions are attributable to the LP or where NaTakallam is unable to provide the purchased service.
Unused sessions generally cannot be refunded after the applicable bundle expiration date.
Any specific refund terms communicated at the time of purchase will apply.
8. Quality and Nature of Language Sessions
Language Sessions are primarily intended for language practice, conversation, cultural exchange, and language development.
The format of a Language Session is flexible and may include conversation, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, media, culture, current events, professional topics, everyday life, or other language-related subjects.
Certain subjects may be sensitive, and LPs may decline to discuss subjects they consider inappropriate or outside the scope of the session.
NaTakallam makes reasonable efforts to identify appropriate LPs and uses user feedback and other quality-control measures. However, NaTakallam cannot guarantee that every session will meet a student’s individual expectations or that an LP will be suitable for every learning style.
9. Opinions and Views of Language Partners
LPs and language instructors may discuss personal experiences, cultural perspectives, political events, social issues, religion, or other topics during language sessions.
The views and opinions expressed by LPs are their own and do not necessarily reflect the policies, positions, or views of NaTakallam, its officers, employees, contractors, or shareholders.
For child sessions, LPs must follow the additional safeguarding and professional-boundary requirements set out below.
10. Children and Minors
10.1 Minimum ages
NaTakallam accepts students for:
- General Language Sessions: age 6 and older
- Integrated Curriculum: age 10 and older
NaTakallam may impose additional age or program restrictions for particular services.
10.2 Parent or guardian registration
For a student under 18, NaTakallam may require the student’s parent or legal guardian to register the student, purchase the service, provide required contact information, and provide any consent required by applicable law.
The parent or legal guardian represents that they have the authority to consent to the child’s participation and to provide the information submitted to NaTakallam.
NaTakallam may request additional information or documentation where reasonably necessary to verify parental or guardian authority or comply with applicable law.
10.3 Parent/guardian contact
For children and younger students, NaTakallam will maintain a parent or legal guardian as the primary administrative contact where appropriate.
Parents and guardians should ensure that NaTakallam has accurate and current contact information and should promptly notify NaTakallam of any relevant changes.
10.4 Professional boundaries
NaTakallam’s LPs and instructors are expected to maintain appropriate professional and educational boundaries with all students and must comply with NaTakallam’s Child & Youth Safeguarding Policy and applicable Code of Conduct.
For child students, LPs must not:
- engage in sexual, romantic, flirtatious, exploitative, abusive, or otherwise inappropriate communication;
- request unnecessary personal information from a child;
- ask a child to keep communications or interactions secret from a parent, guardian, NaTakallam, or another appropriate adult;
- request or solicit money, gifts, financial assistance, or other benefits from a child;
- offer inappropriate personal gifts or benefits to a child;
- arrange private or in-person meetings with a child outside an approved NaTakallam program;
- exchange personal phone numbers, personal email addresses, or personal social-media accounts with a child for private or ongoing communication outside the NaTakallam service;
- use WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, or other private messaging services with a child unless expressly approved by NaTakallam for a legitimate program purpose;
- connect with or communicate with a child through personal social-media accounts;
- request inappropriate photographs, videos, or other personal material;
- share sexually explicit, abusive, or otherwise inappropriate content;
- engage in conduct that could reasonably be understood as grooming, coercion, manipulation, or exploitation.
10.5 Approved communication channels
Communication between LPs and child students should take place through NaTakallam-approved channels and platforms.
NaTakallam currently uses approved video-conferencing platforms including Zoom and Google Meet.
LPs must not use personal accounts, personal contact details, or private communication channels to establish independent ongoing relationships with child students outside the NaTakallam program.
NaTakallam may establish additional communication requirements for specific school, university, organizational, or child-focused programs.
10.6 Recording, photographs, and screenshots
LPs and students may not independently record, photograph, screenshot, distribute, publish, or otherwise capture a session involving a child unless expressly authorized by NaTakallam and, where required, the appropriate parent or legal guardian.
Where a third-party platform offers recording, transcription, AI, or similar features, those features should not be activated by an LP for a child session unless expressly authorized by NaTakallam and appropriately disclosed and consented to where required.
10.7 Safeguarding concerns
Anyone who has a concern about the safety or welfare of a child participating in a NaTakallam program should contact NaTakallam immediately at [email protected], preferably using the subject line “Child Safeguarding Concern.”
NaTakallam may take immediate protective measures, including suspending an LP’s or student’s access to the service while a concern is reviewed.
Where required or appropriate, NaTakallam may report concerns to parents or guardians, schools or partner organizations, law enforcement, child-protection authorities, or other relevant authorities.
Nothing in these Terms prevents NaTakallam from making a report or disclosure where required or permitted by law or where reasonably necessary to protect a child or another person from harm.
11. Confidentiality and Safeguarding
NaTakallam respects the privacy of students and LPs.
However, confidentiality is not absolute. NaTakallam may disclose information where reasonably necessary to provide its services, investigate a complaint or safeguarding concern, comply with legal obligations, protect a person from harm, enforce these Terms, or otherwise comply with applicable law.
In particular, LPs and other users must not interpret a request for confidentiality as preventing a child from speaking to a parent, guardian, teacher, NaTakallam representative, or other trusted adult about an interaction or concern.
12. Integrated Curriculum
NaTakallam’s Integrated Curriculum (“IC”) is an Arabic language program integrating Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and colloquial Arabic.
The program is based on the Arabiyyat al-Naas approach and is designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners.
NaTakallam instructors participating in the Integrated Curriculum may receive preparation and training associated with the curriculum.
The one-on-one format allows instructors to adapt the curriculum to the student’s level and needs.
Students may be assessed by their instructor to determine an appropriate starting point.
The Integrated Curriculum may also be adapted for children aged 10 and older, subject to the child-safeguarding requirements in these Terms.
13. Integrated Curriculum Pricing and Refunds
The applicable Integrated Curriculum price is displayed at the time of purchase.
Unless otherwise stated at the time of purchase, an Integrated Curriculum package expires six months from the date of purchase.
If a student wishes to delay the start of the program, they should contact NaTakallam as soon as possible.
Unless otherwise stated at the time of purchase, a student requesting a refund of an Integrated Curriculum course must cancel before the start of the third session to receive a refund of remaining tuition. A $75 administrative fee may apply, together with prorating for sessions already completed.
Specific refund terms communicated at purchase will govern where they differ from this general policy.
14. Integrated Curriculum Cancellation and Tardiness
Students should provide at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an Integrated Curriculum session.
Cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice may result in the loss of the session credit.
If the instructor is more than 15 minutes late or does not attend, NaTakallam will make reasonable efforts to reschedule or restore the relevant credit.
If the student is more than 15 minutes late, the session may be forfeited.
15. Gifts
Gift cards and gift bundles are subject to the terms communicated at the time of purchase.
Gift cards may be redeemed according to the instructions provided by NaTakallam.
Unless otherwise specified, gift bundles are subject to the same validity periods applicable to the corresponding purchased session bundles.
Gift recipients must comply with these Terms when using NaTakallam services.
Where the gift recipient is a child or minor, the applicable parent/guardian and safeguarding requirements in these Terms apply.
16. User Responsibilities
Users agree to:
- provide accurate information;
- use NaTakallam services only for lawful purposes;
- treat LPs, instructors, staff, and other users respectfully;
- comply with reasonable instructions relating to scheduling and use of the service;
- not misuse NaTakallam’s platforms or services;
- not attempt to circumvent NaTakallam’s safeguarding or communication requirements;
- not use NaTakallam services to solicit money, employment, immigration assistance, personal favors, or other benefits from LPs or other users;
- not harass, threaten, exploit, discriminate against, or otherwise abuse another user.
17. Intellectual Property and Use of Materials
NaTakallam materials, curriculum materials, website content, branding, text, graphics, and other proprietary materials remain the property of NaTakallam or their respective owners unless otherwise stated.
Users may use materials provided as part of a language program for their own educational purposes but may not reproduce, distribute, sell, or commercially exploit them without authorization.
Third-party curriculum materials remain subject to the rights of their respective owners.
18. Third-Party Platforms and Services
NaTakallam uses third-party services to provide certain aspects of its programs, including video-conferencing, payment, communications, scheduling, analytics, translation, and other technology services.
Third-party platforms may have their own terms and privacy policies.
NaTakallam does not control the privacy or security practices of independent third-party providers and cannot guarantee their practices.
Where a student is required to use a third-party platform to participate in a session, the student or parent/guardian should review the relevant third party’s terms and privacy information.
19. Suspension or Termination
NaTakallam may suspend or terminate access to its services where reasonably necessary to:
- protect a student, child, LP, employee, or other person;
- investigate a safeguarding, safety, abuse, fraud, or misconduct concern;
- address serious or repeated violations of these Terms;
- comply with applicable law; or
- protect the integrity or security of NaTakallam’s systems.
Where appropriate, NaTakallam will determine whether a refund or other remedy is warranted based on the circumstances.
20. Changes to These Terms
NaTakallam may update these Terms from time to time to reflect changes in its services, operations, legal requirements, or safeguarding practices.
When material changes are made, NaTakallam will take reasonable steps to notify users, including by posting the updated Terms on its website or providing notice through another appropriate channel.
The “Last Updated” date at the top of these Terms indicates when the Terms were most recently revised.
21. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-law principles, except to the extent that applicable mandatory law in the jurisdiction of a user provides otherwise.
Nothing in these Terms is intended to limit any consumer or other legal rights that cannot lawfully be waived under applicable law.
